Looking for an adventure without spending half the day in the car? Lewis County is perfectly positioned for easy day trips throughout Southwest Washington and the South Puget Sound. Pack a lunch, load up the kids and explore somewhere new — most of these adventures are within about an hour of Centralia and Chehalis.
Olympia & the State Capitol — ~30–40 minutes
Spend the day exploring Washington’s capital city. Tour the Capitol Campus, walk along Capitol Lake and the waterfront, browse downtown shops and stop at the excellent Hands On Children’s Museum. This would be one of my featured Rainy Day / Kids trips.
Tenino — ~25 minutes
Explore the historic sandstone town of Tenino, visit the Depot Museum, see the historic sandstone quarry and cool off in the famous quarry swimming pool during summer. Add a walk or bike ride along the Yelm-Tenino Trail for a full afternoon.
Yelm & the Prairie — ~40 minutes
Head north through the prairie country for parks, trails, shops and restaurants in Yelm. The 14-mile Yelm-Rainier-Tenino Trail makes this an especially good biking destination.
Eatonville & Northwest Trek — ~50–60 minutes
Make a day of Eatonville and Northwest Trek Wildlife Park, where families can see native Northwest wildlife including elk, bison, bears, wolves and mountain goats. This is probably one of the strongest true family day trips within your radius.
Mount Rainier Foothills — ~1 hour
Drive through Eatonville toward Elbe and Ashford for mountain scenery, small-town stops, hiking and access to the Nisqually entrance of Mount Rainier National Park. Even without spending an entire day inside the park, the drive itself makes a great outing.
Mount St. Helens & Toutle Valley — ~1 hour+
Head south toward Castle Rock and follow the Spirit Lake Highway into volcano country. The Mount St. Helens Visitor Center near Seaquest State Park makes an excellent family destination and introduction to the volcano. Going farther toward the mountain turns this into a longer full-day adventure.
Longview & Lake Sacajawea — ~45–50 minutes
Walk the trails around Lake Sacajawea, explore Longview’s historic civic center and make a scavenger hunt out of finding the city’s famous squirrel bridges. This could be a really fun Cheap/Free Day Trip feature.
Kalama Waterfront — ~50–60 minutes
Explore the Columbia River waterfront, walk the riverfront trail, visit the giant Mountain Timber Market totem pole and watch ships travel the Columbia. Pair it with lunch and you’ve got a very easy family outing.
Woodland & the Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens — ~1 hour
Especially worthwhile during lilac season, the historic gardens feature beautiful grounds surrounding the Klager family’s Victorian-era farmhouse. Woodland also makes a convenient jumping-off point for other lower Columbia attractions.
Winlock & Vader — ~20–30 minutes
You don’t actually have to leave Lewis County for a road trip. Visit the World’s Largest Egg, explore Winlock’s historic downtown and museum, then wander south toward Vader and Little Falls. This could become a fun Lewis County Oddities itinerary.
Toledo & the Cowlitz River — ~25–35 minutes
Explore downtown Toledo, visit Lewis and Clark State Park and its old-growth forest, then head toward the Cowlitz River or Cowlitz Trout Hatchery. Lewis & Clark State Park protects one of the region’s significant remaining stands of old-growth forest.
Mossyrock & Mayfield Lake — ~35–45 minutes
Spend the day around Mossyrock, Mayfield Lake and Ike Kinswa State Park. Swimming, boating, fishing, picnicking and hiking make this one of the best warm-weather family day trips in Lewis County. The White Pass Scenic Byway specifically highlights Mayfield Lake, Ike Kinswa and nearby recreation opportunities.
Morton & the Foothills — ~45 minutes
Explore Morton’s small downtown, visit the historic railroad depot and Morton Historical Museum and enjoy the mountain scenery. Add a stop at Gust Backstrom Park or continue toward Randle for a longer drive.
Randle & Cispus — ~1 hour+
Head into the Gifford Pinchot National Forest for hiking, river access, waterfalls and spectacular forest scenery. The Cispus area is particularly suited to a driving loop with opportunities for short hikes, fishing and wildlife watching.
Packwood — ~1 hour+
Packwood is worth stretching the one-hour rule a little. Explore town, visit the White Pass Country Historical Museum, watch for the elk that famously wander through town and use Packwood as a jumping-off point for trails, waterfalls and Mount Rainier adventures. The White Pass Scenic Byway connects the entire corridor from the Twin Cities through Mossyrock, Morton, Randle and Packwood.
Rainbow Falls & the Willapa Hills — ~30–40 minutes
Take Highway 6 west to Rainbow Falls State Park for a picnic, river exploration and a walk along the Willapa Hills Trail. Washington State Parks specifically highlights Rainbow Falls as an easy outing connected to the trail.
Pe Ell & the Willapa Hills Trail — ~35–45 minutes
Bring bikes and explore a section of the Willapa Hills State Park Trail, wander through Pe Ell and enjoy the farms and forests of western Lewis County. This could be marketed as a Bike Day itinerary rather than simply another destination.
Boistfort Valley Scenic Drive — ~20–40 minutes
Take the back roads through Adna, Curtis and Boistfort for historic farms, mountain views and quiet countryside. Pair it with Rainbow Falls or Pe Ell for a leisurely Sunday drive.
